Dry eye treatment

At Sea to Sky Optometry, we treat dry eyes using intense regulated pulsed light (IRPL) therapy. We use the E>Eye device which is the first dry eye-specific IPL device with IRPL technology.
IRPL is a non-invasive and effective 10-minute procedure that activates the meibomian glands to restore the tear film and reduce dry eye symptoms.
IRPL targets dry eye by:
  • Improving meibomian gland function
  • Unclogging thick oil in the meibomian glands
  • Reducing inflammation & redness
  • Improving the tear film
  • Rejuvenating meibomian glands to produce more oil.

Symptoms

Dry eye is a common condition that can lead to a variety of symptoms including dry, red, scratchy, or uncomfortable eyes, blurred vision and heavy eyelids.

If you have dry eye syndrome, it means your eyes don’t produce enough tears or you’re not able to maintain a proper tear film to keep your eyes moist. In some cases, dry eye disease is caused by a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands are responsible for producing enough oil to keep your tears healthy. If there is a lack of oil in your tears, it can cause your tears to evaporate too quickly, drying your eyes out.

IRPL therapy

Before the procedure, we’ll ask that you remove any makeup or moisturizer from your skin. Then, we’ll give you protective goggles to wear, and apply an ultrasound gel to your cheekbones.

The IRPL treatment consists of 5 flashes from the inner eyelid to the temporal area. After the IRPL treatment, the ultrasound gel is removed and there is no redness or downtime. We recommend wearing sunscreen to protect your skin after your procedure.

IRPL therapy is approved for people with skin tones 1-4 and those who are not currently pregnant. While many people can benefit from IRPL therapy, it’s especially useful for:

  • People with rosacea
  • People seeking a convenient dry eye treatment
  • People who want to treat dry eyes at the source of the problem
  • Contact lens wearers

Therapy results

IRPL therapy can bring you the relief you need and deserve. With over 150,000 patients seeing results worldwide, we are proud to offer this technology to our patients in Pemberton and Lillooet.

Approximately 90% of patients see an instant improvement in dry eye symptoms after the first treatment. We recommend 3-4 sessions, typically spaced 2 weeks apart, for long-lasting results.

Results can last up to 3 years, depending on your eyes. Yearly maintenance treatments are recommended to keep meibomian glands healthy and prevent dry eyes.
